7 Very Quick Takes

* It's hot! I'm hot, I can't clean when I'm hot, and the house seems messier when I'm hot! We are trying to keep the a/c off until mid summer. Is summer next week? Yes I have fans, yes, I'm taking cold showers, yes I'm swimming in the pool and yes I'm half naked most of the time. So if you drop by..you get what you get...

* My room is a disaster. It has been on my to do list for 4 weeks and keeps getting pushed to Sunday. Because I like to start my school week with everything in order. Laundry done, floors clean, and no black mold growing in my shower...But it is hot! I am blogging while Mike runs to the store to get me a Dr. Pepper. That should help me get my room started.

* School is going well. We will be finished at the end of August. So there is no relief in site. We are getting ready to have a few weeks of traveling. We are going to GA for Sarah Beth's graduation, and then to the lake. Then the next weekend is Maddy's theatre performance of Alice in Wonderland.

* Our 4 baby chicks are doing well. I have mostly been ignoring them other than food and water. I really don't have time for babies right now. In 2-3 weeks they can start going outside for a little bit.

* I staked my garden today. I put in 10 stakes and need to stake 4 more rows. We are going to have a ton of tomatoes. I need to find a ketchup recipe so I can can some. The organic ketchup is so expensive for that little bottle. My spinach is not doing so great. I am thinking of growing it on the back porch and see if the shade helps at all.

* Well my Dr. P is here so I have no more excuses to procrastinate.

I just got a recipe for ketchup that I will send tomorrow. It was in the the latest edition of Mary Jane's Garden, an organic gardening magazine. It is a beautiful magazine with wonderful ideas and recipes.

Put in your Malabar Spinach seeds. It is heat-loving.

We do pretty good as far as using our air (or heat) generally our rule of thumb for air is 87 degrees (outside). If that's going to be the high, the air goes on. With your pool and shade you can probably push it a few more degrees, but highs in the 90s are going to come much sooner than the middle of summer.

John's dad never allowed them to use the a/c in a two story house off Mary Street (near Lake Gracie)...your kids might end up like him...he sets the a/c come late spring around 74 (you know, the whole parent-child reaction thing)...I usually have to wear long sleeves in the dead of summer to keep warm b/c of it...since times have been "tough", I've worked him up to 77 degrees (and you think I'm kidding!)

Man I feel like a schmuck. I've had my a/c on for awhile now..then again, no pool, no fans...and no Dr. Pepper!

Well--a word of advice on the hot house thing--we never turn on our air and never have since we've lived in FL. I don't mean never but I mean not consistently. Here are some tips--first of all, forget feeling comfortable unless you are sitting still with a fan. You sort of just have to become one with the heat. Knowing and accepting that you are going to sweat--a lot--makes a huge difference. Don't expect to be cool, and just go with it.
Heather--I am quite sure that all of my kids will grow up to be just like your husband. Although, I will say that they never complain--this is just our life in the summer and we accept and deal with it and aren't miserable. Really.

I think I can deal with it. We have window fans, and it has cooled off since Sunday. I really don't want to spend half my mortgage in power bills so we will persevere until Mike decides we must turn it on.
