Free Loading Chickens

!

My 4 baby girls are now 20 weeks or so, and I have yet to get any eggs. It took a couple of weeks for the coop bullying to cease. My older girls kept them on the roost most of the day for a week. I was sure they would never voluntarily get down. Now they are playing nicer, but no eggs.... My white cochin is so BIG, and she stays so clean. I would think white would get dusty but she always looks sparkling. I am taking them to "Farm Day" at the preschool so the kids can pet them.

I planted one garden box this weekend, and need to tear out the other eight so I can plant those.. I can't wait for a 10 degree drop in temp...It would make gardening, weeding, or just being outside so much more enjoyable.

Freaking OUT!

Ok, so I have a rooster that I am taking to the Eustis farm auction at 4:00. I have been praying that he would remain silent until we got rid of him.

I went and picked up Dreamer from Camp Challenge, my other rooster...

Well I wanted to put hay in Dreamer's cage so I asked Maddy to hold him, while I put in the bedding. She opened the door and let him walk out as pretty as you please.

My neighbor is walking in the cul-de-sac (our chickens are on the down low), and I have to make sure he doesn't crow, squawk, or fly over the back fence..

Maddy is not a good chicken catcher, she always let them run past her.. and now my calm quiet roo in the pen found his voice and I hear a pathetic weak CROW, that gets louder and louder...

"GRAB the chicken and then go get the other one, NOW!!! " Lots of chicken indignation noises from the hens, squawks from Roo as I try to muffle his voice... It doesn't really work well to put your hand over their beaks, I think you have to squeeze their necks to make them shut up ;)

So I grab Dreamer, she grabs Roo and we put them in seperate cages in the garage with the door down..

So the key point is they are leaving here tonight, and not coming back...We are off to the auction!

Chicken Diapers, Yall?

Let me introduce you to the newest member of our coop.

This is Dreamer

She is a sweet 12 week old Red Star

She is also been the victim

of

coop bullying

I found her being chased and pecked violently this afternoon. She has been here 2 days with no

incident.

I got to her before any damage was done physically.

But mentally who knows? Being bullied can hurt a young ones self esteem.

And now I have found her checking out the cat's watering bowl,

and just chilling in the kitchen with me while I was making dinner.

She's really sweet, and really scared of being in the coop.

One of the older hussies decided to make her the target, and let me tell you chickens do succumb to peer pressure.

Why even sweet little Sparkles was pecking this poor baby!

When you put her in the coop she paces by the door and cries..

So

Maddy has moved her into a large dog crate in the school room..

and I am wondering?

Where can I find some of those chicken diapers?

The Chicken Coop (5 Days of FUN)

I have eat, breathed and dreamed about this chicken coop for the last 5 days. I have an awesome farmers tan, dirty man hands, and way more construction knowledge than I ever wanted. But my coop is done!! The ladies spent their first night in it and I found them on their roost this morning all huddled together. In fact only half the roost was utilized. A sure sign that there is room for a red chicken or two? hmmmm?

I NEED a Chicken

Hi my name is Leisa, and I like to collect chickens.

I think about red ones, and striped ones; black ones that lay double yolks, silvery laced ones, and ones that lay blue eggs.

I wonder why?

Why can't I find a cherry legger or Red Star on craigs list?? I know someone has one, somewhere in Florida is a Black Sex Link or Silver Wyandotte that wants to live in my garage (the coop is still not built).

I just need one more chicken, just one more that likes to lay lots of big brown eggs, everyday... Is that too much to ask?

Oh where are you my next chicken?

Signed,

The Chicken Addict
